Innovation Academy for Microsatellites

Shanghai Engineering Center for Microsatellites (SECM) became one of the five pilot spots for satellite innovation research thanks to the Pioneer Initiative of CAS, which was launched in July, 2014. Three months later, Innovation Academy for Microsatellites of CAS (IAMCAS) was founded with the approval of the Party Committee of CAS. On August 22, 2017, Chinese Academy of Sciences officially authorized the foundation of Innopvation Academy for Microsatellites of CAS. On September 26, 2017, the opening ceremony of IAMCAS was celebrated. Born for microsatellite research, IAMCAS has sent many satellites into the space with no failure, including the new-generation Beidou navigation satellite, Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE), Quantum Experiments at Space Scale (QUESS) and the companion microsatellite for Shenzhou spacecraft. IAMCAS has become the driving force in Chinese scientific satellite development, also a leader in military and commercial satellites.


IAMCAS is equipped with more than 600 staff members for scientific research and administration work, over 80% of employees own postgraduate or higher degrees, with the average age of 31. Half of the staff have been actively involved in the whole development process of particular satellite projects. IAMCAS covers an area of 27,000 square meters for quality control tests, mechanical control analysis, space environment study and satellite assembly. With various modern equipments, IAMCAS is capable of developing a variety of satellite models for telecommunication, remote sensing, navigation, micro/nano satellites and scientific experiments.


IAMCAS has set up its organization structure based on three functions. Firstly, a new technology research center was established for the cutting-edge science and technologies in the world. Secondly, three major divisions and four institutes were established to meet the huge demand of China satellite industry, namely, Telecommunication Division, Remote Sensing Division, Scientific Satellites Division, Institute ofSatellite Electronics Technology, Institute of Satellite Control Technology, Institute of Satellite Mechanical and Thermal Technology and Institute of Satellite Software Technology. And the last, Institute for Navigation Satellites and Institute for Mirco/nano Satellites were established to make contributions to our national economy. There are also another three centers set up to support its research, namely, Reliability Center, Software Test and Evaluation Center and AIT Center. IAMCAS has been committed to be the innovation engine of advanced Chinese satellite science and technologies, the experimental base for the transformation and industrialization of aerospace scientific and technological achievements, the bridge between politics, education, research, production and application, and the open platform for international exchanges and cooperation, so as to back up our national strategy and major scientific breakthroughs.
